well damn, i’m frustrated

So it’s been a while! Two months of ‘while’. Here’s what’s happened in between:

– I did, in fact, complete the week of Paleo breakfasts challenge. Hooray!
– I even sustained it for I think another week after that. Hooray!
– Then life got tough/the holidays rolled around/life, oh wow, LIFE and I stopped the challenge and stopped monitoring my calories and basically just let myself go for a while. Booooo.
– I asked for (and received) a FitBit Flex for Christmas. Yay!
– I got back on the weight loss wagon, started tracking again
– I started eating my lunch at my desk and walking 3+ miles each day during my lunch, plus miles on the weekend with R

Here’s where I got serious. As of the 1st of the year, I decided to give melatonin another shot. And this time, I found the right dose – 2 mg a night (in 1 mg pills) taken an hour before bed has me totally ready to sleep by the time I should be. I was still getting anxiety about sleeping each night, so to address that, I’ve been measuring out 2 glasses of wine each night and accounting for them in my calories.

Well, I’ve been tracking for almost three weeks with this technique. Here’s the problem.

First of all, obviously weighing almost every day means that I’ll see the day to day fluxuations. But for the life of me, I can’t remember whether the 150 at the first day was something I was guessing before I set up my scale, or if I actually stepped on the scale for the first time and weighed 150. I’m leaning towards that being the case (which means then i’ve lost 4.4 pounds in 3 weeks – whoo!) but maybe I’m deluding myself to make myself feel better about eating less, drinking less, moving more, and losing literally no weight.

For me, who is finally giving this a solid shot including establishing an entirely new bedtime routine for myself to meet my goals and manage my stress levels, the chance that I’ve made no progress is very discouraging.

That being said, the only way to find out if it’s working is to keep doing it and see what happens. 4.4 pounds in 3 weeks would be super great if it were true, so I guess I will continue trucking on despite my frustration.

I’m also thinking about bringing back the daily eats – another goal of mine is to manage our food budget more wisely, so I’m planning on a lot more home-made food making its way to work. Later all!

just a quick post

I’m off to brave the DMV today, so this will be quick. Yesterday I did well up until the end. I had a breakfast of one serving of soy-free chorizo (which, by the way, is hard to find! apparently soy flour is a common filler?), one medium brown egg, one egg white from the same, and half a zucchini with a sprinkle of Daiya cheddar. Sooooo tasty and filling.

For lunch, I was eyeballing a half pound salmon fillet … I went for it, with some bok choy and zucchini and a hearty sprinkle of cayenne and garlic. Tasty.

And then I had a Lee’s sandwich for dinner. :/ Not my proudest moment, but it was getting late and I needed something the whole family could eat for relatively cheap.

By the way, the new exercise bike? Sucks! Incredibly loud, but more tellingly, it’s too short for me! Even at the highest setting, I’m getting pain in my knees (including a pop that left me sore for two days afterwards) and I’m only 5’5″. I’m leaning towards reselling it on Craigslist and waiting for my first paycheck to come in to scope out real gym options. 😦

a mish-mash (and potatoes)

Yesterday was kind of a weird day, eating-wise. Basically nothing went to plan. I tried my best, though, and I don’t think I came out too poorly.

So, I don’t know if any of you are on Tumblr, but I follow several fitness/health Tumblrs there and fairly frequently a picture of a halved avocado with an egg baked into the pit’s leftover hole runs across my dash. It seems like it would be easy, right? Just plop an egg in there and call it a day! I didn’t bother reading any sort of directions on actually making that, and had two leftover avocados I need to use up before they turn. I ended up with this:

These damn things took forever. First of all, despite me making some extra space, obviously the whole white didn’t fit in, and even the small part of the white that I did think could reasonably fit … spilled. And what was left afterwards took forever to cook, so my yolk cooked through, so instead of my dreams of warm melty avocado and warm melty runny egg yolk, I got … warm, slightly dried on top, avocado and crumbly firm egg. Blech. Also, though I added salt, it needed more. Fail.

Again I got busy and distracted and forgot about lunch. I ended up eating what small serving of chicken pho was left, and the tiny bit of our household Panda Express from the day before.

It was definitely grocery-shopping day, but R wanted to go to IKEA to look for a desk. We failed in that regard, but my lunch was so light that I ended up suggesting dinner there. I got their $2 special because I’m cheap as hell. 😛 I ate half the potatoes, and about 3/4 of the chicken – donating the rest of the chicken to R’s cause.

What is not picture is the half a pound of guacamole I got from Mi Pueblo. R and I dug into it last night and while I certainly had a serving of it, I’m proud that both of us were able to restrain ourselves and not overeat just because it was amazingly delicious. 😀

i jinxed myself! (in a good way)

Remember just, what, two posts ago, when I explained that my main “jump start” to starting this back up again was the fact that I was unemployed? Well, yesterday I got a call that I got a job I applied for way back in July – I’ve interviewed since then, but it was such a slow process that I’ve literally been walking into the (series of several) interviews and thinking of them as practice for when I’m actually interviewing for a job I might actually get. So this is exciting!

But, historically, when I start up a job, I stop updating here. Part of that is a desire to make sure I do everything right in the new job (hence, no updating at work), part of that is a time management strategy, and part of that is absolute laziness. But I’ll do my best! Who knows – maybe I’ll use the extra income to join a gym. 😉

In any case, yesterday I want to use some of this Napa cabbage I bought and haven’t used much of. I got the brilliant idea to mix it with my omelette base … which, I think, could have been done differently. It wasn’t bad though. I also cooked a piece of bacon and crumbled that in as the egg set, and sprinkled Daiya cheddar on the inside.

I ended up running super late throughout the day, due to all the commotion from the call about the job, and it was almost 2 o’clock by the time I got myself a taco (figuring i would fill up on dinner later).

And one ounce of chips (weighed on my food scale).

For dinner, we went out to Panda Express. I’m always super tempted by so many of their breaded products, and compromise with myself by getting their lowest calorie item (beef and broccoli) and one breaded item with a reasonable amount of calories. And man, I REALLY wanted to do half vegetables and half rice, but restrained myself with the promise of the honey walnut shrimp.

Still no exercise. I also didn’t do my math homework so some major goals of the day weren’t met. And I still didn’t drink enough water. Always a work in progress!

Let’s talk about mangoes for a second.

I love mangoes. They are hands-down one of my favourite fruit. But what I sometimes forget, in my yearning for mango, is that I like champagne mangoes. The big old run of the mill ones you tend to find in grocery stores? Not actually my kind of mango. They frustrate me. Their seeds are huge. The flesh clings to the seed and gets stuck in my teeth.

So breakfast wasn’t very satisfying, even with the side of bacon to offset the frustration.

Lunch was much better. I made a “BLT plus chicken” salad. Very savoury and tasty!

I had intended to make dinner at home, but we had a lot to do in the afternoon and I never quite ended up making it to the grocery store. So we went to a pupuseria, where I had a taco and a chicarron pupusa.

One of the things that ate up my afternoon was the purchase of an exercise bike! We’re on a fairly limited budget right now, what with me being unemployed and all, so instead of going my usual route and buying a brand new one, I took a chance on a used BRF 700 bike from Craigslist. The reviews seem generally positive and this allows me more exercise than just “cleaning, light” so I’m excited to give it a whirl today!

And we’re off! Yesterday was a pretty good day. I started off with an omelette – two whole eggs, one egg white, one serving of Daiya pepperjack cheese, and pickled jalapenos. I’m a bit of a spicy food junkie and tend to go in and out “need heat on EVERYTHING trends” … this is definitely one of the times when I’m “on.”

I was really aggravated when I was making lunch (for reasons i won’t share) and ended up just slopping a bit of leftover homemade chicken pho into a bowl and eating it. It did the trick, but ended up way lower calories than I had thought when I entered it into MFP.

So a couple hours later, I need a snack. Two mandarin oranges/Cuties.

And for dinner, EVEN THOUGH I drove the kids and R through one of my favourite fast food joints (del taco, don’t judge me), I resisted and waited until I got home to make myself a salad with chicken, mushrooms, tomatoes, and Brianna’s creamy balsamic dressing. The dressing is quite high on calories for being balsamic – I’m going to go shopping for a replacement in the coming days.

No beer at night, only two 1.5 ounce shots and some nibbles on leftover slow-cooked pork for a snack. One huuuuge mistake I made was taking my melatonin too late – I ended up feeling snacky and wandering through the kitchen while I waited for it to kick in. Tonight will be better.

Room for improvement:

1) More water! I only drank four cups.
2) More movement! I did about forty minutes of walking, but it was slow and not the kind of exercise I should be aiming for.
3) More veggies! I ended strong but the first part of the day was pretty meh.

Well, I’m sad to say that I cheated a bit last night. Not terrible – there were definitely less paleo choices I could have made! – but I’m kind of kicking myself today for so mindlessly munching on microwaved chicken nuggets (of all things!). Anyway, the breakdown of the day prior to that (obviously i didn’t photograph my shame – next time i should!):

Breakfast. I grabbed these frozen sausages without realizing they were two per serving instead of one. They’re tiny, they have soy protein (the quick ‘n’ eat ones i normally have do not have soy), and they’re not as good. :/ No thanks, Johnsonville, not again!

I threw some chicken thighs in enchilada sauce in the oven when I left for work, and came home for lunch to some beautifully cooked meat. I added a whole avocado on top for fiber, fat, and deliciousness.

Dinner was the leftover chicken thigh, avocado, cheese, tomato, and salsa verde on a bed of romaine. Pretty tasty and felt super light. Yay vitamin A!

I did have half a Coors Light and half an IPA after dinner. I had had a bad headache all day that multitudes of drugs didn’t cure, so I thought perhaps it was a lack-of-carbs-induced headache. No such luck and the beers definitely weren’t worth the calories or the deviation from paleo. :/ I have it again today so I’m thinking I may just be getting sick. I did spent 57 minutes on the elliptical for a whopping 500 calories so that at least offset my bad choices a bit.

I’m finding eating paleo to be SO much easier than keto, you don’t even know. I am excited to fill my meals with vegetables in addition to the meats and fats that I eat, in a way that I was decidingly not excited to fill my keto meals with simply fat. I tend to have hard carb cravings at night (damn do i miss that bedtime piece of toast!) but have remained strong, so far. Yesterday was pretty simple.

Half an avocado, half a tomato, half an ounce of cheese, and leftover chicken.

I was at a loss at lunch, so I just made some garlic chicken thighs and cauliflower “rice” with some cheese on top. It was meh.

Eating dinner on the go – a Chipotle chicken salad with no beans, no rice, guacamole, cheese, and salsa. Tasty but so damn expensive. :/

Day one of paleo went great! I honestly haven’t been struggling with the low carb thing at all – the emphasis on fats kind of throws me off, but I’m working my way there. Without a gallbladder, eating fatty foods is kind of a hit or miss, but so far I’ve been able to tolerate most of what I’ve made.

I got a little hungry before lunch and was pretty pleased that paleo allowed me some super low calorie, super tasty berries as a snack.

I ventured into the cafeteria for lunch and was able to scrounge up some salt and pepper and olive oil’d asparagus, giant meatballs, and toppings. I gotta say, those meatballs were PLENTY. I was stuffed by the end.

My kitchen is a mess so I threw in the towel and took us out to eat for dinner. I got the low carb chicken club from Carl’s Jr. with no mayo for only 270 calories. It was … okay. Something I’d eat because it fits into my diet, not because I particularly enjoy it.

I did one of the exercise videos On Demand, a kickboxing-ish one by some trainer I’ve never heard of. It was only 24 minutes long but it was quite the workout for someone who hasn’t been working out lately! Lots of jumping squats – my butt and hamstrings are pretty sore today. But! I was down from 150.6 to 148.8 (i suspect that i was gaining so quickly on keto because of water weight) so at least the scale is validating my decision.

So, R approached me last night about our diet. I say “our” because I’m the cook of the household, and we don’t have the resources for me to eat a completely separate meal from everyone else, so what I’ve been doing (as i have mentioned before) is making a keto-friendly meal and then throwing a carb on the side.

The problem with this, of course, is that the keto meals are fat heavy and ineffective without super low carbs. R has been maintaining a “normal” diet and was concerned that, longterm, joining me on only the high fat portion of the diet was going to .. well … make him fat! (he can’t participate in keto for a couple different reasons)

As a compromise, I offered to switch over to paleo, which is not necessarily lower fat but can be, and includes some carbohydrates so all my meals won’t be so drastically different than his. I changed my macros in MFP over to 20% carbs, 30% protein, and 50% fat and will be embarking on that journey starting today. But to close out my unfortunately short-lived experiment with keto, yesterday’s meals.

The usual breakfast. I think I’ll continue this as it’s quick, easy, filling, and cheap.

I was pretty sure that I took a picture of dinner, but apparently not! We had more bacon-wrapped asparagus (i’ve already gone through our pack of bacon … oops!) along with sausage-stuffed mushrooms. It was tasty but oh man, the grease. 😦

Alright everyone, I’m off to do a little more reading up on the ins and outs of paleo. It’s worth noting that I gained another half a pound since yesterday, so I think I’m due for a session at the gym today!
